The official announcement of the funeral date came on Sunday evening. The funeral will be held in Oslo Cathedral, according to the Royal House. The funeral ceremony will be led by, among others, Bishop Olav Fykse Tveit. The ceremony will follow the traditional Norwegian funeral liturgy.
Harald's burial will therefore take place in the same place where his father, King Olav, was buried in 1991.
Mourning salute is fired
The day of the funeral begins for the royal family with a private gathering in the palace chapel.
Afterwards, the main gates of the palace will be opened and a 21-gun salute will be fired from Akershus Fortress.
The King's coffin is then carried in a solemn procession from the palace to Oslo Cathedral. Family members, representatives of Norwegian society and foreign guests are invited to participate.
Soldiers from all branches of the armed forces will be stationed along the route.
Standing in the Red Salon
The coffin has been in the Red Salon of the palace over the weekend. On Monday, the coffin will be moved to the court chapel on a catafalque and draped in the royal flag. It will be carried in a procession with the royal family and representatives of the court through the palace.
A private memorial service will be held in the chapel. The chapel will then open on Tuesday at 2 p.m. to allow the public to file past the casket, until the day before the funeral at 6 p.m.
On Sunday, a memorial service was held in Asker Church, southwest of Oslo, with large parts of the royal family in attendance.
Several other memorial services were also held on Sunday around Norway.
