Sjögran after the threats: "Only strengthened us"

Rosengård is on its way to the perfect season in the women's top league. This despite the team having to live with a player being subjected to serious threats. It feels like this has only strengthened us, says sports manager Therese Sjögran.

Rosengård can secure the Championship gold as early as Monday after winning all 20 Damallsvenskan matches so far, but the Malmö club has been affected by repeated threats against a player in the squad during the season. Threats that have been reported to the police.

Training sessions have been closed to outsiders during certain periods, and after matches, for example, security guards have been on the pitch at Malmö IP when the players have met fans.

"Incredibly impressed"

The players themselves have not wanted to comment on the situation, but sports manager Therese Sjögran is impressed by the performance on the pitch.

That they have been able to deliver that kind of football and have been so tight-knit. It feels like this has only strengthened us, really. I'm incredibly impressed, she says.

Besides 20 straight wins, Rosengård has an almost incredible 86–5 goal difference.

It's hard to describe. We're coming from a 2023 that was the worst year we've had in the club's history. To be able to turn it around is, of course, incredibly strong.

Rosengård had two straight Championship golds before finishing seventh in the series last year.

We've been able to do it because we decided pretty early on to keep the staff and as much of the squad as possible from 2023. We've still believed in something and I like continuity. We had patience and it's given us results this year.

No team has won all matches in Damallsvenskan, which had its premiere in 1988, during one and the same season.

We're not talking about it. Our goal has been to finish top three – and we've done that. This business of breaking a lot of records – honestly, I couldn't care less, and it's not something we talk about. Records are just a bonus. We should win every match and if we do, we'll win the Championship gold.

Hangover for Häcken?

The gold can be secured on Monday away against Piteå – despite five Damallsvenskan rounds remaining after that match. In addition to a Rosengård win, it requires that top contenders Häcken (14 points behind Rosengård) and Hammarby (15 points behind) drop points against Växjö and Örebro, respectively, on the same evening.

First and foremost, we need to win, but I don't think they'll drop points. Maybe there'll be a little hangover for Häcken now that they've been eliminated from the Champions League, but Hammarby went through, says Therese Sjögran.

In mid-May, a player was threatened with murder – on YouTube – before a match in Damallsvenskan Rosengård.

In August, new threats were made against the player – two days in a row. This time, they were sent to an email address belonging to the club.

Further threats came in September against the player, and it was also revealed that a general threat had been directed against all players in Damallsvenskan. Players from Vittsjö, Djurgården, and Linköping have since been affected.

All threats have been reported to the police, who say they have obtained IP addresses from which the threats were published.

As a consequence, security has been tightened in Damallsvenskan, including visitor checks at several arenas.

No team has won all matches in Damallsvenskan, which had its premiere in 1988, during one and the same season.

On three occasions, a team has gone through the series without losing a single match. Both in 2005 and 2006, Umeå won 21 matches and played one draw. Linköping won 20 matches and played two draws in the 2016 season.

Since the 2022 season, the series has consisted of 14 teams and 26 rounds – previously, 12 teams participated.

Rosengård has won 20 out of 20 matches played this season. Six rounds remain.
