Ribom qualified for the quarterfinals in the sprint but then chose to throw in the towel.
"Emma has aches in her back and therefore chooses not to continue today's sprint as a precautionary measure. She will rest this afternoon before we make a decision about tomorrow", said national team coach Stefan Thomson in a statement.
Later on Saturday, the news came that Ribom also chooses to skip the 20 km freestyle, which concludes the cross-country skiing World Championship weekend in Ruka, Finland.
In a statement, Ribom says:
"I had aches today during the prologue and couldn't push as I wanted – so I choose not to compete tomorrow. Even though it's clearly a super disappointing decision to make."
The 22-year-old talent Märta Rosenberg will replace Ribom.
