Sweden won with 3–1 in sets: 22–25, 25–23, 25–23, 25–22.
I am super proud of how we performed the match. We had it a bit tough in the beginning but then we got more and more into it. So incredibly pleased and proud of the team, says Joel Andersson.
It is the second time Sweden wins against higher ranked and more experienced Spain in the qualifying round, after Sweden also won the match away.
We have worked a lot on team cohesion and it is on days like these that it shows, we have really found a good chemistry. Super fun, all the guys are super nice and I think the whole team deserves all the credit, says Andersson.
Sweden now tops group E in the European Championship qualifying round, which also includes Switzerland. Sweden has seven points, Switzerland four – the Swiss have however played one match less than the Swedes.
It would have been the biggest in a very long time and the biggest I have been involved in, feels like it is about time, says experienced spike player Viktor Lindberg about going to the European Championship.
Now one match remains for Sweden in the qualifying round – Switzerland away on August 16.
The winner of the qualifying group advances to the European Championship. Also the best ranked second places can qualify.
