American golfer Joel Dahmen was on the fourth tee in Las Vegas when he, to his horror, made the discovery:
A four-iron, in the wrong compartment in the golf bag.
Never happened to me before, said Dahmen after realizing he had played with two four-irons.
After calling in the competition leadership, the feared message came:
Four extra strokes are added to the 36-year-old's first round at the PGA tour event, as a penalty for having played with more than 14 clubs in the bag.
He doesn't know how the club ended up there, he didn't see any extra club during the practice rounds on Tuesday and Wednesday. But he travels to tournaments, like many other players, with 15 or 16 clubs in his luggage.
With the penalty strokes, Dahmen finished the round on 76, five over par, and is now struggling to make the "cut" on Friday.
