Swedish Women's Hockey Team Renamed to Tre Kronor Dam

The women's national team will no longer be referred to as Damkronorna by the Swedish Ice Hockey Association. But even if the official name changes, Damkronorna will survive as a nickname, the association states.

Over the years, we have received some pointers from various researchers and investigators who say that it is not optimal how we name our series and national teams, where "dam" is often used as a prefix, and where men's and boys' series and national teams are without the gender designation, says communications manager Linus Hugosson in a web broadcast on the association's website, according to Dagens Nyheter.

So it becomes a subtle exclusion, or a subtle marking, that women's and girls' hockey is something a little different, says Linus Hugosson.

The official name will now become Tre Kronor Dam. The men's national team will be named Tre Kronor Herr.

Then we will continue to talk about Damkronorna and Herrkronorna, but then as nicknames, says Hugosson according to DN.

The news of the name change was released when the national team squad for a four-nation tournament in Switzerland was presented. Of the 22 selected players for the matches against Finland, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland in Kloten next week (28-30 August), 17 players were born in the 2000s. For defender Tuva Kandell, Northeastern University, and forward Edit Danielsson, Frölunda, a match debut in the senior national team awaits.

The season's big goal is the Olympic Games tournament in Milan in February.
