87-year-old Queen Sonja suffered from atrial fibrillation in connection with a skiing trip. The situation is not considered serious and the queen is described as being in good shape, according to the royal family.
The queen was on duty last on Thursday, but has no upcoming events scheduled on her agenda.
Royal expert Trond Norén Isaksen tells NTB that the news is surprising, since the queen has not had any major health concerns previously.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre writes in a statement to the Norwegian news agency that he wishes the queen a speedy recovery "and hopes that she will soon be ready for new skiing trips".
The queen's husband, King Harald, was on sick leave for nearly two months last year after suffering from heart problems during a vacation in Malaysia at the end of February. Doctors then determined that he had a low heart rate, and the king subsequently had a pacemaker implanted.
After that, the royal family announced that the 87-year-old monarch would scale back his duties, due to his age.
