Over 160,000 demonstrators gathered at various locations in central Berlin on Sunday to express their disgust over the conservative CDU's shift to the right since the party sought support from the extreme right-wing party Alternative for Germany (AFD) for stricter asylum legislation.
A large protest took place outside CDU's party headquarters in the German capital following last week's political developments.
Along the avenue Strasse des 17 juni by Brandenburger Tor, demonstrators marched with banners demanding that German parties continue to turn their backs on the extreme right-wing party AFD through a so-called firewall.
Germany is going to the polls on February 23, and CDU with party leader Friedrich Merz is the favorite in the election.
