Over 410,000 Syrians who fled to Turkey under Bashar al-Assad's regime have returned since he was ousted in December last year, Turkey's government announced.

The number of returnees has increased in recent weeks. Since mid-June, the migration authorities have counted 140,000.

According to the UN's refugee agency UNHCR, 600,000 Syrians have returned home from neighboring countries. Still, around 2.5 million Syrian refugees live in Turkey, according to statistics from August.

In 2021, Turkey stated that up to 3.7 million Syrians had sought refuge in the country.
