In total, it is about almost 100,000 identity documents, which customers have left to their hotels in connection with check-in or booking.
The alleged perpetrator behind the data intrusion is then said to have tried to sell the information on the darknet – where the person claims that the documents were stolen between June and August this year.
In total, ten hotels around Italy have been affected by the intrusion, but the authorities in the country do not rule out that additional cases may appear. They are now warning that the information can be used to create false ID documents, open bank accounts or commit other crimes.
