The delegation arrives just two days after the Russian President Vladimir Putin and the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un spoke on the phone. Then the two countries promised each other strengthened cooperation.

The phone call took place in the light of the upcoming meeting between Putin and his American counterpart Donald Trump in Alaska on Friday.

Pictures from the site show how flags from both nations are waved when the Russian delegation lands in North Korea's capital Pyongyang and is welcomed by several North Korean politicians.

Russia and North Korea have tied increasingly close bonds in recent years and in June last year they signed a military agreement that includes a clause on mutual defense commitments.

More than ten thousand soldiers have also been sent to fight on the Russian side in the Ukraine war, according to South Korean and Western intelligence. As recently as July, a direct air link between the countries was also opened.
