The accident is said to have occurred on Tuesday in the Swiss canton of Ticino.
According to Expressen's information, the local police believe that the 38-year-old lost control on a straight stretch, drove into a cliffside next to the road and then overturned.
Alexander Gerndt was seriously injured, but according to Lugano – where he is part of the coaching staff for the U21 team – the situation is under control.
Previously, he has played for, among others, Young Boys, Utrecht, Gefle, and Helsingborg.
The striker made his national team debut at the end of 2010 and scored two goals in six A-international matches.
