Prior to the quarterfinals in the European Championship in beach volleyball, the German home pair Ehlers/Wickler promised a better performance than in the Olympic Games final.
Then it became a defeat in Swedish favor.
We wanted this chance for revenge. Now we will do everything to be better, said Nils Ehlers to SVT before the match.
The match became, just like in the Olympic Games, a one-sided story.
The Swedes took command early and won the first set with 21–19.
The second set was won with clearer numbers, 21–16, and thereby Åhman and Hellvig are clear for the semifinal.
There, the Dutch Stefan Boermans/Yorick de Groot are waiting on Sunday.
After the match, the Swedes took the opportunity to praise the opponents and the audience.
The Olympic Games final was a really fun match. It's always good matches against them. It was fun to play against them here in Germany as well, in front of their home audience. Some in the audience seemed to be cheering for us too, so thank you, says David Åhman in the interview in SVT's broadcast after the match.
The European Championship is held in Düsseldorf, Germany.
