The EU will introduce tariffs on imports of electric vehicles from China as of Thursday, since Brussels and Beijing have failed to find a solution to the trade dispute, says the EU's spokesperson Olof Gill.
The EU has justified the tariffs on Chinese electric cars by stating that China subsidizes its oversized car manufacturers, which gives them a competitive advantage over European car manufacturers.
China has threatened the EU with retaliatory measures targeting European goods, such as agricultural products and heavy trucks.
According to the EU Commission, the sales of Chinese-made electric vehicles increased from 3.9 percent of the electric vehicle market in 2020 to 25 percent in September 2023.
The EU countries voted in favor of permanent tariffs on electric vehicles from China already in early October, but China's trade department stated after that that they wanted to continue negotiating with the EU on tariffs.
