Alvar Myhlback will not be able to defend his Junior World Championship gold medals from last year. The 18-year-old cross-country skiing talent is dropped from the Swedish team.

The reason for the deselection is believed to be that Myhlback did not meet the national team's requirement to participate in a qualifying competition for juniors in Sweden. Last week, he had a last opportunity but opted out of a competition in Bergeforsen to instead compete in the long-distance cup in Switzerland.

Myhlback won two gold medals at the Junior World Championship last year, in the 10 km classical and relay events. But already on Wednesday, at a press conference ahead of the weekend's competitions in the long-distance cup, the 18-year-old stated that he probably would not get a spot on the Swedish team for the championship in Schilpario, Italy, on 3-9 February.

I don't think it should be a discussion. It takes a lot of energy, which is a shame. And it's not fair. They make a decision that they know isn't good for any of us. I just think it's totally stupid, said Myhlback.

In the press release where the team is presented, Myhlback's absence is not commented on.
