The Norwegian chess star Magnus Carlsen arrived at the World Championship in rapid and blitz chess wearing jeans. The organizers did not appreciate it and demanded a change of pants. But Carlsen refused and was therefore out of the championship, which is being played in New York, according to several media outlets.

It is the International Chess Federation (Fide) that requires players to follow a certain dress code. But Carlsen, who has been named the world's greatest chess player of all time, defied the rules.

As it feels now, it's all-out war against Fide, said Magnus Carlsen to Norwegian NRK.

Carlsen's drastic decision surprised Jøran Aulin Jansson, vice president of Fide.

He has not always been satisfied with Fide's decisions. But that it would lead to such a dramatic ending surprises me, says Jansson.
