Mill was part of the German national team that won the World Championship in Italy 1990, and is a legend in the club team Dortmund, which he won a cup title with.

The former star striker died of complications after a heart attack in May, writes Dortmund in a statement.

"He was one of my heroes and a welcome guest at our arena in recent years. Without Frank Mill, Dortmund would not have won the cup in 1989 and would not be where we are today", says Dortmund's chairman Reinhold Lunow.

The German Football Association's sports director Rudi Völler played with Mill at the World Championship 1990.

"He was a true team player who contributed to the incredible team spirit and that fantastic time in Italy. He was a fine football player and a rascal in the best way, both on and off the pitch. We will miss him", says Rudi Völler.
