In the semifinal, it was a victory with 4–2 against the reigning world champion Spain, despite Marta being absent due to the suspension she received in the group stage.

In Saturday's final, the 38-year-old may be back in play. The superstar has announced that she will end her national team career after this year – and now she gets the chance for a real dream finale.

Brazil and Marta have never won an Olympic gold in women's football. Twice before (2004 and 2008), they have reached the final – and both times they lost to the USA.

Now, the USA awaits in this year's Olympic final. The Americans advanced after a dramatic penalty shootout against Germany in Lyon, where Sophia Smith became the match hero when she scored the 1–0 goal five minutes into extra time. It was her third goal in the tournament.

The USA women's team has four Olympic golds. In Tokyo three years ago, they won bronze.

Correction: In an earlier version, the incorrect number of Olympic golds won by the USA women's team was stated.
