A 72-year-old man died in the stands during the final stages of the Premier League premiere between Brighton and Fulham. This confirms Brighton in a statement after the 1–1 match.
"The man fared ill during the second half, and despite efforts from the rescue service, the club's staff and the medical team, his life could not be saved", the club writes.
Brighton writes further that the match was not interrupted because an interruption would have directed attention to the situation and possibly complicated the resuscitation attempts.
"Our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to the man's family and friends", says the club's CEO Paul Barber in the statement.
