Spain

A massive heat wave arrived already at the end of May.

In late June, the village of El Granado in Andalusia set a heat record for June, when the temperature was measured at 46 degrees.

The fires have continued, and continue, to rage in the Spanish forests and this week the country has asked the EU for help to combat them.

Thousands of people have had to leave their homes and thousands of hectares of land have been scorched.

Italy

In August, red heat warnings, which are the highest on the scale, have been issued for several days for various cities in the country.

A four-year-old boy on Sardinia has died as a result of heat stroke.

A fire has broken out in a national park, at the volcano Vesuvius, in southern Italy.

Greece

Towards the end of June, distress calls also came from Greece. Several powerful fires spread on the island of Chios.

Then the warnings of high temperatures and fires continued. In July, thousands had to be evacuated on the holiday island of Crete and in August a man died after severe forest fires south of the capital Athens.

The country has received help from both the Czech Republic and Italy to combat the fires during the summer.

Albania

Despite Greece's own problems with forest fires, they have supported the neighboring country Albania, which has also been affected.

An 80-year-old man died in one of the summer's fires, just outside the capital Tirana.

Finland

In late July, it became clear that Finland had its longest period with temperatures above 30 degrees, which lasted for 14 days.

France

In southern France, the heat waves have led to difficult-to-extinguish fires, as the heat has brought temperatures up to 43 degrees or higher.

When a forest fire broke out during the summer, the airport in Marseille had to close.

United Kingdom

The United Kingdom, which is usually more known for its rain, has also felt the heat waves.

Recently, reports came that the water shortage is so large that it is classified as "nationally significant".

The first six months of the year were the driest in almost 50 years.

Sweden

When June was approaching, a heat wave also reached Sweden.

The heat persisted in July and led to a long wave of high temperatures.

Haparanda and Jokkmokk had the longest heat wave in over 100 years.
