The Swedish attacking star was recruited to Arsenal from Sporting earlier this summer. The 27-year-old got the chance from the start away in the top match against Manchester United in the premiere round of Premier League.
Gyökeres, who took the club icon Thierry Henry's classic number 14 in Arsenal, did not make a dazzling debut, however. The Swede had a hard time getting into the game in a tight first half.
Arsenal took the lead after a quarter of an hour when the United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir had been out and flapped at a corner and Riccardo Calafiori was able to push the ball in from close range. But after that, it was mostly positional warfare.
With an hour played, Gyökeres was substituted in favor of the German Kai Havertz. United took over the match more and more but had a hard time getting clear scoring chances. The balls that did get through the Arsenal defense could be handled by goalkeeper David Raya.
Last season's top team Chelsea started this season scoreless when they played a draw against Crystal Palace.
Last year's big surprise, Nottingham Forest, showed that they can manage just fine even without the Swede Anthony Elanga on the wing. Forest took a clear victory at home against Brentford with 3–1 after two goals by central defender Chris Wood.
