Phillip Island penguins get bird flu vaccines as Australia braces for extreme summer conditions
Australia has become the last continent to report its first cases of H5N1 bird flu. The virus is spreading rapidly, and the expected extreme weather this summer could, in the worst-case scenario, create a perfect storm that kills thousands of birds and other animals. “The worst, most devastating scenario would be that we lose entire species,” says Darren Grover, a biodiversity expert at the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
