Australia's E-safety Commission requested information in February 2023 about how the company, then called Twitter, was working to prevent child abuse material from appearing on the platform. Elon Musk bought Twitter a month later and renamed it X.

According to the ABC, X has admitted it did not provide the information requested but tried to contest the fine by claiming that Twitter no longer existed. That argument was rejected this summer, and X has now been ordered to pay 650,000 Australian dollars in fines, plus the agency's legal costs.
