"These are scenes that should not have happened. People need to be able to express their views peacefully, but the police were very clear about the routes that applied if people wanted to march," Albanese told radio station Triple M Hobart, according to ABC.
Thousands of people gathered to protest against Israeli President Isaac Herzog's visit to Australia. The protests began peacefully but degenerated into clashes after police tried to disperse the demonstrators. Police reportedly used pepper spray on both demonstrators and journalists at the scene.
A total of 27 people were arrested, ten of whom were suspected of violence against a public servant, in connection with the demonstrations.
