Their refusal to sing the national anthem before the match against South Korea could be interpreted as a silent protest against the Iranian regime.
Before the match against Australia, on the Gold Coast, the Iranian women sang along when the national anthem was played.
However, they suffered a second loss in the football championship, 0–4.
Iran had a crowd of supporters in the stands.
"They are brilliant because they don't get many chances to play. They are real people, even under pressure, and we are proud of them. As a woman, I am proud of them," Iranian-Australian Nasrin Vaziri told ABC.
