Man arrested in Brisbane on suspicion of hate crime after driving into gates of city's largest synagogue

The man, in his 30s, crashed into the gates on Friday evening, local time, and then fled the scene. He was arrested a short time later, ABC reports.

No one was injured, but the synagogue remains closed after the incident. The state's premier, David Crisafulli, said in a statement that he had spoken to both police and Jewish leaders.

"I want to assure the people of Queensland that we are taking this seriously," he said, adding that the incident signals that the proposed changes to the law following the terrorist attack on Bondi Beach in Sydney last December are needed.
