The Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has said that he will cut support to Ukraine. He has also said that he could end the war in 24 hours – and that he will continue to support the country.
At a press conference outside Reykjavik, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyj was asked how he views the possibility of Donald Trump becoming the US president again.
I haven't heard that Trump said he would stop supporting Ukraine if he becomes president, says Zelenskyj.
But he talks a lot.
Pointing to Congress
The press conference was held together with the prime ministers of the Nordic countries on Monday, in connection with the Nordic Council of Ministers meeting on Iceland this week.
The US is currently the single country that has provided the most support to Ukraine in monetary value, and most of it is military support. European countries have collectively provided more support, but most of it is economic or humanitarian.
Volodymyr Zelenskyj emphasizes that it does not solely depend on the American president how large the support is, but to a large extent on how the distribution will be between Republicans and Democrats in Congress.
The greatest risk is if the US's direction changes, he says.
"He doesn't want to lose"
Zelenskyj does not believe that Donald Trump will give up on Ukraine because it would be seen as a loss.
Not supporting Ukraine, I believe, will be a big win for Vladimir Putin and a big loss for the West, for unity, democracy, and freedom, says the Ukrainian president.
I don't think Trump, if he becomes president, wants to lose.
The presidential election in the US is held on Tuesday, November 5. The Republican Donald Trump has a small lead over the Democrat Kamala Harris in the latest opinion polls.
