Chrystia Freeland, Canada's Minister of Finance and Deputy Prime Minister, is leaving the government. This means that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is losing one of his closest confidants.
Freeland says that resignation was her only "honest and possible" choice after Trudeau offered her another portfolio in the government last week.
The Prime Minister survived a vote of no confidence in September, but has faced growing criticism even within his own liberal party, and voices are being raised that he should not stand for re-election.
Trudeau wants to see Mark Carney, former central bank governor in both Canada and the UK, as Minister of Finance. Carney is said to be aiming to replace Trudeau as leader of the liberal party.
