Sweden to Build New Nuclear Power for First Time in 50 Years

The Government and The Sweden Democrats are pleased with Vattenfall's announcement to proceed with the nuclear power plans. For the first time in 50 years, new Swedish nuclear power will be built in Sweden, says Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (The Moderate Party) at a press conference at Ringhals nuclear power plant.

He is aware that nuclear power plans are very long-term and emphasizes the importance of political unity.

From the business community, one demands political stability, says Kristersson.

We are completely open to discussing upcoming decisions with the other parties, he continues and thinks he sees a spirit of more consensus on nuclear power across the bloc boundary.

Close to S

KD leader Ebba Busch thinks that the Social Democrats have long been clear that they are in favor of new nuclear power.

I feel that we are quite close to each other, she says.

Vattenfall's CEO Anna Borg says that the business community's interest group Industrikraft will participate closely in the continued process, in the project company that has been formed.

So that we can invest together, she says.

The state can also become a co-owner of the company.

We can imagine being co-owners of this owner company, says Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson (M).

As if it were clear

All party leaders express themselves at the press conference as if the decision to build new reactors had already been made, which it is not yet for a long time. Today's message from Vattenfall is mainly about the company narrowing down the number of suppliers and landing on the fact that in the continued planning, it is about building smaller reactors, so-called SMR: er.

I can state that new nuclear power will now be built in Sweden, and within a reasonable time, says the leader of the Sweden Democrats Jimmie Åkesson.

Ebba Busch fills in.

It's not a question of whether we should build, but how fast and how much, she says.
