California's democratic governor Gavin Newsom has signed the bill, which was voted through in the state's senate during Thursday afternoon, local time.
The goal is to get an additional five congressional seats for the Democrats in the midterm election 2026.
We do not want this battle, we did not choose it, but with our democracy at stake, we do not intend to flee from it, says the democratic politician Marc Berman.
However, the new map must be approved by the state's inhabitants, in a special election planned for November 4.
Only a day earlier, a similar proposal, to the advantage of the Republicans, was voted through in Texas state congress.
The proposal was presented there at the request of the US president Donald Trump with the intention of securing five new Republican seats in the House of Representatives. The proposal is also expected to be voted through in the state senate on Thursday evening.
If both proposals are approved in the states, both parties will have the same conditions as before the electoral districts were changed.
