Ukrainian Man Arrested in Italy for Nord Stream Sabotage

Italian police have arrested a Ukrainian man suspected of having sabotaged Nord Stream 1 and 2. This has happened since four leaks were discovered on the gas pipelines that go from Russia to Germany through the Baltic Sea.

26 September 2022: The leak in Nord Stream 2 is discovered. The day after, leaks are also discovered in Nord Stream 1. Early suspicions of sabotage arise, leading to speculation that Russia might be behind it. In Sweden, Denmark, and Germany, three parallel investigations are initiated.

3 October 2022: The Swedish prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist decides to cordon off an area around the leaks to conduct a crime scene investigation.

11 October 2022: The Swedish government calls an emergency meeting due to the war in Ukraine and the gas leaks.

18 November 2022: Mats Ljungqvist confirms that the pipelines have been subjected to sabotage and that explosives have been found.

12 January 2023: Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, reacts to the fact that both Sweden and Denmark have rejected Russia's proposal for a joint investigation.

25 May 2023: Russia summons diplomats from Sweden, Germany, and Denmark in protest over the "complete lack of progress in the countries' investigations".

26 August 2023: The German newspaper Der Spiegel writes that several pieces of evidence in a German investigation point to Ukrainian involvement.

7 February 2024: The Swedish investigation into the sabotage is closed down.

26 February 2024: The Danish police conclude that it is a case of deliberate sabotage, at the same time as the investigation is closed down.

30 November 2024: The German federal prosecutor Jens Rommel states that two people, suspected of sabotaging the pipelines, have been identified.

21 August 2025: A Ukrainian man is arrested in Italy, suspected of constitutionally hostile sabotage. It is unclear if the man is one of the two people previously identified.
