A court in New York rules that the President of the USA, Donald Trump, avoids a fine of 5 billion kronor. But the verdict will be appealed, the prosecutor announces.

It is the state of New York that has driven a civil fraud case against Trump, who is accused of having blown up the value of his properties and thus got cheaper loans.

Last year, Trump was sentenced to pay equivalent to approximately five billion kronor in fines. He appealed and now, seven months after his return to the White House, the fine is rejected by a higher court – while the judgment in other respects is upheld.

The fine is "excessive" and contravenes the US Constitution, writes two of the judges in a statement.

"Total victory", writes Donald Trump on his own platform Truth Social and calls the case a "political witch hunt".

Letitia James, the state of New York's Minister of Justice and prosecutor in the case, has accused Trump of "lies, cheating and staggering fraud".

She announces that she intends to appeal to the state's highest court.
