The protests have their origin in the roof collapse at a train station in Novi Sad in November, where 15 people died. Several times, most recently this week, the demonstrators have been met with violence from riot-equipped police. On Saturday afternoon, the plan is for the protests, which have occasionally gathered 100,000 participants in different parts of the country, to culminate in an action in front of the country's parliament.
Already on Friday, thousands of demonstrators, many of them students, arrived in the capital and carried out protests.
President Vucic has accused the demonstrators of being organized "from the outside" and that he would only resign "if they kill him", reports the news agency EFE.
The EU has long criticized Serbia, which has been negotiating EU membership since 2014, for its lack of democratic reforms.
