Deportations from the remotely located migrant detention center "Alligator Alcatraz" in Florida's swamplands have begun, announces the state's governor Ron De Santis.

The first planes, arranged by the Department of Homeland Security, flew around 100 detained migrants to other countries.

You will see the number increase dramatically, said De Santis at a press conference.

No information was given about which countries the deportations went to.

The Trump administration has defended the placement of a detention center for illegal migrants in the swamp next to Everglades National Park – among alligators and snakes – by saying it has a deterrent purpose. The White House has also sent migrants to a detention center in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, and to a maximum-security prison in El Salvador.
