A snake so small that it can be mistaken for a worm has been seen on Barbados, decades after it was suspected to have been extinct.
A specimen of the rare species Barbados tree snake was found under a stone in central Barbados during an ecological mapping.
–There have only been a handful of observations since 1889, so it's not many people who have ever seen one, says ecologist Connor Blades from the environmental department on Barbados who was involved in the discovery.
The breakthrough came after years of searching for the snake. The rediscovery is a positive sign regarding the biological diversity in Barbados, comments Blades to CBC.
The small snake is blind and probably feeds on termites and termite eggs. Fully grown, it becomes between eight and ten centimeters long.
