Meloni: Italy Not Ready to Recognize Palestine as Independent State

Italy will not follow the French decision to recognize Palestine as an independent state as it looks now, says the country's Prime Minister Georgia Meloni to the newspaper La Repubblica.

I am strongly for the state of Palestine, but I am not for recognizing it before it has been established, says Meloni.

If something that does not exist is recognized on paper, the problem may seem solved even though it is not, she continues.

France's president Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday that the country will formally announce its decision to recognize Palestine in September at the UN General Assembly.

”The urgent need today is for the war in Gaza to end and for the civilian population to be saved”, the president wrote on X.

The announcement that the decision will be formally announced has received mixed reactions. Israel's prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemns the decision, which he calls a move that ”rewards terror”.
