A bus went off the road and overturned into a ravine in the Peruvian Andes on Friday.

At least 18 people were killed and 48 injured in the accident, which occurred near the town of Tarma in central Peru, according to health authorities.

The bus, a double-decker that landed on its roof by a river, was broken into two parts, as shown in images on local TV. Why the driver lost control on the narrow road is unclear and is being investigated by the authorities.

The journey went from the capital Lima to the town of La Merced.

Severe traffic accidents are common in Peru, often due to negligence, speeding and poor roads. Last year, 3,173 people were killed in traffic, according to the police.
