Photographers with pleading puppy eyes adorn the protesters' shirts during a protest on Sunday in Turkish Istanbul.
There, thousands have gathered to try to stop a bill that would allow stray dogs to be euthanized.
An elderly woman is knocked down by one of Istanbul's many stray dogs in a video clip that has been spread on Turkish social media. The clip has sparked outrage – and has become part of the campaign for a bill that parliament will soon vote on.
The bill means that dogs without a home or owner can be caught and sterilized. If no one adopts them within 30 days, they will be euthanized.
Millions of stray dogs are estimated to exist in Turkey. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has argued that drastic measures must be taken and refers to the heightened risk of rabies that prevails in the country.
Dogs, according to the government, have caused over 3,500 road accidents in recent years, with 55 dead and over 5,000 injured as a result.
But the bill's critics, who gathered on Sunday on Yenikapi Square in Istanbul, call it a "murder law".
