Preliminarily, 528 newborn girls were given the first name Alma in 2024, making Alma the most popular girls' name of the year. In 2023, Elsa and Vera were the most common names, now ranking fourth and fifth on the very even list.
Alice was second in 2024, while Olivia took third place.
What we can see when it comes to girls is that the trend of shorter names continues, says Caroline Ledin, statistician at the Tax Agency, to TT.
It often involves slightly older names that have come back. It's a trend that has been going on for a few years now, largely thanks to the Elsa films (Disney's "Frost" about Princess Elsa).
If we shift our focus to boys, the name Noah holds on to first place. Preliminarily, 647 newborn boys were given the first name in 2024, making Noah the most common boys' name for the second year in a row. William is always equally popular in second place, followed by Hugo in third, Liam in fourth, and Adam in fifth.
On the boys' side, we see a greater variation in terms of the length of the names. But the trend of slightly more Anglo-Saxon names is definitely holding, says Caroline Ledin.
The list of names is long – and Caroline Ledin has made an exciting discovery when going through it.
What I think is extra fun about the list this time is that there are very many names with a unique bearer this year. Names like John-John, for example, she says.
