The relationship has been ongoing since 2004, according to an internal investigation. It also appears that the doctor has prescribed central stimulant medication without a proper examination, despite the patient having heart failure and taking benzodiazepines.

The investigation was initiated after a complaint against the doctor in 2024, which was then forwarded to the Inspectorate for Health and Care (Ivo), which has also reviewed the man previously.

He was convicted in 2021 for eleven cases of data intrusion after he illegally read a patient's journal. The doctor's explanation was that they had a sexual relationship and that he wanted to see if the person had HIV.

After the verdict, Ivo reported him to the Health and Medical Care Responsibility Board and advocated for him to receive a three-year probationary period. However, he was dismissed after the new information and the employer believes that the doctor's actions have been unprofessional and influenced by the relationship with the patient, as well as having compromised patient safety.
