The UN's Climate Chief: The Climate Fight Can Handle Trump

The global fight against climate change will be able to withstand Donald Trump being re-elected as the President of the USA, says the UN's climate chief Simon Stiell. Our process is strong. It is robust and will stand the test, said Stiell at a press conference at the climate meeting COP29.

During his previous presidency, Trump pulled the USA out of the Paris Agreement, something he has said he will do again. The re-election has cast a long shadow over the climate meeting, where many fear that the threat of a new withdrawal will lower the ambitions around the negotiating tables.

Money is at the center of this year's meeting, with the question of how much rich countries should contribute to help developing countries meet the climate challenges. Several of the countries that are paying are resisting the current commitment of 100 billion dollars per year being increased, even tenfold.

Many see domestic concerns about inflation and slow recovery as a bigger problem than the climate. But for Stiell, the two are connected.

The climate crisis is rapidly becoming an economic killer, he warns.

Climate measures are a global insurance against inflation.
