State epidemiologist Magnus Gisslén leaves the Public Health Agency and directs harsh criticism at his old employer.

I have during this time put a lot of effort into trying to strengthen the authority's scientific anchorage and medical competence. But my commitment to this issue has become so uncomfortable for the authority that they no longer want me to continue. I have therefore chosen to resign, says Gisslén in a video statement.

In a post on social media, Gisslén writes that the authority has "serious deficiencies" and that he feels a responsibility to tell about them.

The purpose is to initiate a discussion that can lead to change in the best case. Something that is required for Sweden to have a strong infectious disease control authority and be well-equipped for the next pandemic, says Gisslén.

Medical competence is lacking"

In a debate article in Dagens Nyheter Gisslén develops the criticism and the reasons for his resignation. He writes that it is, among other things, about a lack of medical competence in the management.

In a written comment to TT, Ellen Jones, unit manager at the Public Health Agency, writes that Gisslén's assignment as state epidemiologist has been terminated due to different perceptions of what the role entailed and what was expected of him.

"The work at the authority does not stand and fall with individual individuals, but is carried by an organization with high medical competence and ability to handle infectious disease control issues and other issues within our important mission", writes Jones.

Investigator new state epidemiologist

Gisslén took office as state epidemiologist in September 2023 and is now returning to his previous job as professor of infectious diseases at the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg.

Senior physician and lecturer Erik Sturegård will now be acting state epidemiologist from September 1 until a new regular one has been appointed. Sturegård is currently employed as an investigator at the unit for infectious disease control coordination and monitoring of seasonal viruses.

Both Gisslén and Minister of Social Affairs Jakob Forssmed have declined an interview with TT.
