The police urge Swedish travelers who left their ID documents at hotels in Italy during the summer to block their personal information.

Nearly 100,000 digital copies of passports and national ID cards have been stolen from about ten hotels in Italy and put up for sale on the darknet, according to Italian authorities.

There is therefore an increased risk of identity theft, the police write on their website.

Travelers who have stayed at hotels in Italy are urged to contact the Information Center (UC) to block the personal identity number so that no unauthorized person can apply for credits or loans. They are also urged to log in to the Tax Authority's website to block unauthorized address changes.

According to the police, there may also be reason to apply for a new passport or national ID card and invalidate the old one.
