The coalition of Western countries that have committed to supporting Ukraine has had a meeting to "strengthen the plans" for security guarantees. "An aggressor must never be rewarded. On the contrary, we must ensure that it will not happen again", writes Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (The Moderate Party) to TT after the meeting.

The purpose of the digital meeting, which was led by the United Kingdom and France, was to update the EU leaders on the result of Monday's meeting in Washington.

"Important discussions today about Ukraine's and Europe's future and security, both in the Coalition of the Willing and in the EU circle. History shows what risks happening when common rules are set aside", says Ulf Kristersson in a written comment to TT afterwards.

"An aggressor must never be rewarded. On the contrary, we must ensure that it will not happen again. Therefore, Sweden is involved in the talks on security guarantees – it is central also for our own security", he continues.

Fifth largest donor

Prior to the meeting, he stated to TT that "Sweden is the fifth largest donor to Ukraine. We are because we know that how the war ends also affects our security here in Sweden. The pressure on Russia must increase".

During the meeting, the next steps for security guarantees and potential sanctions to pressure Russia further were also discussed, according to a press release reported by The Guardian.

But exactly how the security guarantees will look is still unclear.

Further discussions

The participating leaders from over 30 countries agreed during the meeting to send teams to discuss with their American counterparts in the coming days "to further strengthen the plans to deliver robust security guarantees”, among other things to be able to place forces for Ukraine's security ”if hostilities cease”.

Nato soldiers on the ground in Ukraine can however threaten a potential future peace agreement. In a statement on Monday evening, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that ”we repeat our categorical opposition to all scenarios involving the deployment of Nato soldiers in Ukraine”.
