Obesity, or obesitas, is the most common risk factor for adults with myocardial infarction, shows a new registry study made with support from the Heart-Lung Foundation.
Previously, smoking was the largest risk factor among adults aged 18-59 who suffer from myocardial infarction in Sweden, but the new study shows that obesity is now in first place.
The study, where over 44,000 people have been followed after having a myocardial infarction, also shows that even if men are at greater risk of suffering from myocardial infarction, women have more risk factors than men and also a worse prognosis after a myocardial infarction.
Three out of four young adults who suffer from myocardial infarction had at least one known risk factor, often high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking or obesitas, with a BMI over 30.
