The Centre Party is summoning Minister for Social Affairs Jakob Forssmed (The Christian Democrats) to the Riksdag's Social Affairs Committee. They demand that he answers how Sweden's preparedness for a new pandemic looks.

The Center Party's message comes against the background of the Public Health Agency's state epidemiologist Magnus Gisslén having suddenly resigned on Monday. He has held the top job at the agency since September 2023.

Given the criticism that has come from the outgoing state epidemiologist, it is clear that it raises a great deal of concern. And the responsibility lies with the minister to ensure that the agency functions and fulfills its mission, says Christofer Bergenblock, member of the Center Party in the Social Committee.

He is now demanding that Forssmed come to the committee as soon as possible. The Riksdag is still closed over the summer but will reopen at the beginning of September.

Magnus Gisslén wrote on Monday in a debate article in Dagens Nyheter that the Public Health Agency's management lacks medical competence and that there are serious deficiencies in leadership at the agency. He warns of what the consequences may be.

"I have lost my confidence in the agency and am concerned about its ability to handle a future pandemic that may well prove to be significantly more serious than the one we have just gone through", he writes.

The Public Health Agency says, however, that Gisslén recently received notice that his assignment as state epidemiologist would be terminated due to different perceptions of what the role entailed and what was expected of him.
