The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute warns of grass fires

Sunny weather – and plenty of dry last year's grass. This means a high risk of grass fires in southern Sweden, warns SMHI. There have been quite a few fires already this spring, says meteorologist Kjell Lund.

Already in February, when it was still minus degrees in many places, the first grass fire warnings came.

Now SMHI is warning of a high grass fire risk in snow-free areas in Götaland, including Öland, large parts of Svealand, southern Gävleborg County, and Gotland on Wednesday.

It burns very well in last year's grass. It can take just a spark from a forestry machine, for example, says Kjell Lund.

The dry grass doesn't bind any water, so it's not until it gets warmer and the grass starts growing again that much of the risk disappears.

The grass fire risk is likely to remain high for the rest of the week.

The dry weather will probably continue over the weekend, so it's a good idea to be careful over the coming days.
