Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who took office as prime minister in September, is the youngest daughter of telecommunications billionaire and former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and is the fourth member of her family to lead a Thai government in 20 years.
Now that she has taken office as prime minister, she is required to declare her assets and liabilities to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), and it is these declarations that have now been made public.
Her total assets amount to more than 400 million dollars, equivalent to nearly 4.5 billion Swedish kronor. The prime minister owns, among other things, several properties and land in Thailand and also has properties in Japan and the United Kingdom.
Paetongtarn Shinawatra has also declared that she owns 108 rings, 205 pairs of earrings, and nine examples of the designer toy Bearbricks.
Her father and predecessor Thaksin Shinawatra, who previously owned the football club Manchester City, has assets of 1.2 billion dollars, according to Forbes, making him one of the ten richest people in Thailand.
Thailand has the highest level of income-based inequality in East Asia and the Pacific, according to the World Bank.
Paetongtarn Shinawatra's coalition government has promised to reduce living costs for residents through a combination of cash handouts and attracting new foreign investments.
