Odense municipality is now seeking the help of experts both in Denmark and abroad to find out how to get rid of the larvae, according to TV2 Fyn.
The species is called the oak processionary moth and is primarily found on the Iberian Peninsula with a wider distribution throughout much of Central Europe.
In Denmark and Skåne, individual finds have been made previously according to the Species Database. However, in Denmark, this is the first time such large concentrations have been found.
Since we import oaks from the south, we have expected that the larva could be introduced at any time, says emeritus lecturer Hans Peter Ravn at the University of Copenhagen to the news agency Ritzau.
The larvae's venomous hairs can detach at light touch or simply by the larvae moving. The hairs can spread several kilometers with the wind and can cause painful and difficult-to-heal injuries.
