The big club – where Swedish players Magdalena Eriksson and Linda Sembrant play – extends the contract with Maria Grohs so that she can focus on her treatment in peace and quiet.

"With the help of everyone here, I'm sure I'll recover fully. I have the best possible doctors here in Munich and I can count on full support from my team and club," says the 23-year-old on the club's website.

Grohs kept goal for Bayern as recently as Tuesday when they won 3-0 against Vålerengen in the Champions League.

"It's hard to find words for such news. Health and life are far more important than sports," says the club's sports director Max Eberl.

Grohs joined Bayern Munich in 2019 and has won three league titles with the club. Last month, she was selected for the German national team, but was forced to withdraw due to a tonsil operation, according to the AP news agency.

The new contract with Bayern Munich runs until June 30, 2026.
